What is Equality and Diversity?
At Derwentside Homes, we see equality as treating everyone equally and diversity as valuing people differences. It’s also about ensuring that all people are able to achieve equal outcomes in their work and have an equal opportunity of promotion regardless of Age, Disability, Gender, Race, Religion and/or belief, and Sexual Orientation.
It is not about treating ‘everyone the same’ but recognising that we can meet everyone’s needs in different ways.
Derwentside Homes takes a much wider approach to equality and diversity and covers all six strands as mentioned above:
- Age
- Disability
- Gender
- Race
- Religion and/or belief
- Sexual Orientation.
By looking at all six strands, we are able to address the needs of our customers and staff on multiple levels.
The customers of Derwentside Homes come from different and diverse backgrounds and Derwentside Homes aims to ensure we recognise individuality and diversity throughout our engagement with our customers. We accept employees for their ability and skills to the work and recognise their cultural backgrounds and differences in lifestyles as bringing benefits to Derwentside Homes.
This makes equality and diversity much more than a ‘one off’ programme. It is something at the heart of Derwentside Homes and we engrain it in every task and procedure. It is inbuilt in our governance, performance and service delivery frameworks. It is an essential part of developing new services around the needs of all customers and we need to be aware of the legislation and implications for every employee and tenants.
