Equality at Work - a quick guide
Derwentside Homes recognises its responsibility to both employees and to the customers we serve. We are committed to equal and fair treatment in our employment practices and in access to our services.
Equality is about:
- Working in an environment that is free from discrimination;
- Recognising, accepting and valuing people’s differences;
- Treating all individuals fairly - without bias, prejudice or stereotyping. This applies to all the services we provide to our local communities and to all recruitment, appointment, promotion and career development decisions affecting employees and the communities we serve; and
- Working together to ensure we have a policy that really works. This means that all employees have a responsibility to support the policy, ensuring we do not discriminate against colleagues, job applicants, suppliers, or tenants or people in the community who receive a service from us.
Equality is not about:
- Lowering standards in any way;
- Pretending that everyone is the same; or
- Giving particular groups or individuals unfair advantage.
Derwentside Homes also recognises it has a duty to ensure it complies with all equalities legislation. We seek to eliminate discrimination and promote equality of opportunity.
Derwentside Homes has an equality and diversity policy. It sets out our view on our responsibilities towards the fair treatment of our employees with regard to all areas of their employment. It also outlines what we expect from our staff, both in their treatment of others and the standard of service delivered to the public and tenants.
