Motorised Scooters
Derwentside Homes is committed to promoting independence and creating real choice for older people and we aim to support our tenants in order for them to remain as independent as possible.
We also acknowledge our older tenants’ lifestyles, expectations and aspirations in relation to scooter usage and demand for them in our sheltered accommodation.
Derwentside Homes recognise the need to provide scooter storage for each Court and have included it when redeveloping Haven House and we aim to follow this by providing storage in all Courts. It is essential that we have a
Mobility Scooter Procedure in place to address any related issues.
We do realise that being able to have the use and ownership of a mobility scooter gives both disabled and older people, physical and mental benefits through:
- Mobility – scooters allow users to enjoy increased outside activity.
- Independence – having the use of a scooter keeps users active and enables them to maintain their independence.
- Social Inclusion – using a mobility scooter can reduce isolation and improve quality of life.
- Access – allows users to access services in the wider community, which they may have otherwise been
excluded from using.
As well as the benefits, using a mobility scooter also brings with it responsibilities. For this reason, the procedure allows tenants in our properties to use and store scooters subject to certain conditions.
These conditions are applied for reasons of legality, practicality and the general health, safety and welfare of tenants. It is also important for the safety and welfare of staff and members of the public in the building to fulfilling
our legal responsibilities in relation to the DDA and Fire regulations.
First and foremost, permission must be granted from Derwentside Homes prior to the tenant purchasing a scooter. The individual user must take responsibility for safe usage of their mobility scooters, this should include minimising disturbance to neighbours, ensuring that they do not exceed the speed limit and avoiding damage to any parts of their property or communal areas, and agree to have the scooter PAT tested annually, as well as having adequate insurance to cover a third party and any damage caused to property.
Where there are storage facilities provided, a waiting list will apply. Priority will be given to those with greatest need.
