Schoolgirl puts new street on the map
A County Durham schoolgirl has put herself on the map – after naming a new street.
Amy Lawson, aged 9 from Consett has won a competition by Derwentside Homes to name a street for one of its new housing developments.
The housing association, which manages around 6,700 properties in County Durham , is currently building seven new affordable homes at Castledene Road in Delves Lane , Consett.
As part of the development, children from the nearby Delves Lane Community School were asked to choose a name for one of the new streets that would be created.
Amy’s winning entry will see the new street known as West Ellimore View – a name she chose because of the development’s proximity to 19th Century West Ellimore Coal and Clay Pit.
Amy, from Templetown, said: “I am very happy that I have won the competition. My family are so proud of me.
“I thought the street name should be linked to the areas history, so I looked some old maps up on the internet and found there was once a clay pit in the field next to where the houses are being built called West Ellimore Clay Pit.”
Amy who also won £50 worth of vouchers, was the lucky winner out of her school who were invited to enter the competition to name the street.
Karen Holden, Head Teacher at Delves Lane Community School said: “We are delighted for Amy.
“She obviously researched the name very well. It’s a lovely link for the school to have been part of naming the development.”
Susan Gowland, Community Investment Manager for Derwentside Homes, said: “We really wanted the community to get involved.
“The children came up with some great names for the new street. They all seemed to know a lot about the local area and its history.”
All seven two-bedroom ‘eco-homes’, which are part of a development by Southdale, will be available for rent and are expected to be completed this winter.
