There are many leisure activities available in Derwentside and the surrounding areas. Derwentside District Council offers the following venues.

Consett

Belle Vue Swim Centre
The centre is accessible by public transport and has free parking. It offers a six-lane pool, with a disabled hoist and a learner pool, an exercise area, a sauna suite with a steam room, the services of a beautician, and a cafeteria.

Belle Vue Leisure Centre
The centre is accessible by public transport and has free car parking. It offers a large sports hall, two fully equipped gyms, a fully air-conditioned fitness suite, squash courts, an indoor bowling green, Fantasy Playland, and a licensed bar area.

Empire Theatre
This provides a popular venue for theatre and cinema, as well as staging professional acts and entertainment from all over the UK as well as international groups. A licensed bar is available. A full induction loop system is installed within the auditorium for people with hearing difficulties. The downstairs area has full disabled access, a toilet and washroom for disabled people, and disabled parking at the front of the building.

Stanley

Louisa Centre
The centre is in the heart of Stanley. It offers a swimming pool, large sports hall, a weight-training room, an exercise suite, a lounge area with catering facilities, a children’s play area and also the Louisa Nursery, a full day-care centre for children aged 0 to 5 years.

Lamplight Arts Centre
The centre is in the heart of Stanley. This provides a venue for cinema, live theatre, professional acts and entertainment and dance and craft courses. It has full disabled access, with parking for disabled people directly outside and an induction loop for people with hearing difficulties.

Public transport

You can get information on bus services, including timetables and fares, from Traveline on 0870 608 2 608. Please note that all calls to this number are charged at the national rate.

If you have access to the internet, you can use the journey planner service on Durham County Council’s website. You simply type in your start and finish points, and you will then be given information such as the bus number and timetable. You can use the journey planner by visiting the county council’s web page at www.durham.gov.uk, and then following the link to ‘travel’ on the home page.
