Successful Partnership Creates Hundreds of New Homes

Spirit LogoA successful partnership of social landlords has helped build hundreds of affordable new homes; surpassing all its targets.

The Spirit Partnership, which covers an area spanning the North East and Yorkshire and Humberside, has once again over performed and exceeded its goals for new property handovers.

Despite the economic crisis, during 2009/10, the members of the partnership planned to build 376 new high quality properties but between them built 528 - 140 per cent of the target. The partnership invested almost £37m into new homes against an initial target of £13m.

The partners, until 31st March were: Broadacres Housing, Coast and Country Housing, Derwentside Homes, Erimus Housing, Housing Hartlepool, Tees Valley Housing, Three Rivers Housing and Two Castles Housing. Sedgefield Borough Homes and South Tyneside Homes joined the partnership recently increasing the strength of the partnership. This means the organisations can jointly bid for grants from the Homes and Communities Agency allowing them to build quality, affordable new homes.

The work also meant vital affordable home ownership options helping people get a foot on to the property ladder, as well as providing new properties for rent.

Steve Melvin, Director of Development and Property Services at Derwentside Homes said: “we are delighted by the successes of the partnership.”

“Working in partnership stimulates innovation in helping more people access new homes”.
