Housing Benefit

If you have a low income, you may qualify for help towards your rent and Council Tax. Housing Benefit (Rent) and Council Tax Benefit (Council Tax) are managed by Council’s as part of a national scheme, controlled by the Government.

You can get application forms from Derwentside District Council or by contacting us. You only need to fill in one form to apply for both benefits, and help is available if you have difficulty with this. If you successfully claim benefit, please read the letter that comes with the notice very carefully. You have responsibilities under the Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit scheme, and you should make yourself fully aware of these. If you are in any doubt about your duties or responsibilities, or any other aspect of your claim, please contact the council. Vists the Derwentside District Council website, which also has a benefit calculator.

Even if you qualify for full benefit, please remember that you will still have your water rates, insurance premiums and any service charges to pay. You will have to make arrangements to pay the amount you owe using one of the payment methods available. You will receive a separate bill for your Council Tax. Please see the bill for ways to pay.

If you would like more information please contact Derwentside District Council on 01207 693693 or by contacting us on 08458 505 600.
